The programme is designed for practicing industry professionals such as Software Engineers and Business Analysts who have an honours degree in Information Technology, Computing or related areas. The course will equip students with a significant computing knowledge with a focus on modern big data management, big data analysis and visualization methods, text analytics and big data specific programming skills coupled with relational and NoSQL data stores. In addition, it provides a foundation for research skills to help the student become an independent researcher. It provides the technical skills and research training necessary to develop sophisticated data analysis and retrieval systems applicable to Big Data Analytics.

This Master’s degree course offers extensive training in Big Data technology and methods, providing the opportunity to upgrade existing skills to the state-of-the-art in areas such as data mining, programming for distributed systems, NoSQL databases, text analytics techniques and leveraging cloud computing platforms for Big Data analytics. A strong research focus will equip students to either move on to a PhD programme or an industry-based research position or be an industry consultant in Big Data solutions.

The MSc project module is of particular value to students to further enhance their ability to produce well-documented and high-quality work of an advance technical standard to deadline and a high standard of presentation. It will give them a strong foundation and self-confidence to introduce and implement Big Data projects in their work place. This will in turn benefit the local IT industry in Sri Lanka.

At all stages of study, the course content is complemented by practical work intended to not only reinforce the learning process, but also to enhance their vocational relevance of the course of study. The syllabus content incorporates course modules intended to enhance the technical and professional skills required to manage and execute state-of-the-art Big Data processing systems.

Entry Requirements

The normal minimum entry requirements are an Honours Degree (2nd class) in a discipline with significant IT, Computing, Mathematics or Statistics content.

In general, all potential applicants are subjected to an interview to discuss the level of qualification offered and the experience gained in an industrial background.

These requirements may be relaxed for applicants holding a qualification or industrial experience of equivalent standard. In general, an interview is required for entry to the course.
